SMD Capacitor Coding Systems

  • 3-Digit Code: First 2 digits are significant figures, 3rd digit is multiplier (number of zeros) in pF
  • 4-Digit EIA: First 3 digits are significant figures, 4th digit is multiplier, letter indicates tolerance
  • EIA-198: 2 characters (letter + digit) - letter represents value, digit represents multiplier
  • Direct Marking: Value written directly (1µF, 10n, 470p)
  • 'R' indicates decimal point: 2R2 = 2.2pF, R47 = 0.47pF
